Training
The goal of the CIG (Certified Interpretive Guide) program is to provide consistent,
high-quality training for people who have had little or no opportunity to learn about
interpretation or who want a refresher course on the basics of
presenting interpretive programs. The CIG credential recognizes that the student
understands and can successfully apply the NAI accepted principles of interpretation to
deliver quality programming. The credential is particularly important to employers who hope
to gain a competitive edge in the marketplace by
providing certified interpretive guides.
For the prospective student, certification is a way to document that you possess skills and
knowledge that allow you to perform effectively in the interpretive profession.
What is the CIH (Certified Interpretive Host) program all about?
The Certified Interpretive Host category is designed for staff and volunteers at interpretive
sites who have public contact but don’t usually deliver interpretive programs. Receptionists,
maintenance workers, law enforcement officers, campground hosts, greeters, and sales
clerks are among the individuals who
may find the program helpful. CIH training combines customer service with informal
interpretation to help participants improve their responses to guests in general while helping
achieve stewardship goals of the organization.
I am a certified trainer in good standing with the National Association for Interpretation for both
the CIG and the CIH courses. Call me to discuss training for your staff, volunteers, and/or site
support staff.
